What Ellen Degeneres Knows for Sure http://www.third-beat.com/?p=990 I’m not ashamed to admit I fully bought into the “Ellen on the cover of O” hype. I PVR Ellen daily, and watched as her campaign for the cover evolve from a joke into reality. So when, the evening before its official release, I found the issue at a deserted Gateway newsstand at Newark’s terminal A, I gleefully clutched it as if my Little Orphan Annie Secret Decoder Ring had just arrived.
Ellen Degeneres on the cover of December's O magazine. While not as smokin’ hot as her W cover feature shots a few years back the cover – and its alternates – are quite pleasing. The newsstand version features Oprah sitting atop a gift box, with Ellen pouring booze from a flask into Oprah’s champagne glass. The version for subscribers has Ellen emerging from the box (both feature the word “Joy” in huge red script splashed across the full width of the page, a fantastic use of the commonality between the issue’s two themes: Christmas and Ellen). Inside are 2 additional covers with the ladies decorating a huge gingerbread house, and Oprah tying up Ellen with a string of Christmas lights.
Ellen pens this edition of the monthly column What I Know For Sure. The introductory list of things she knows is purely jokey, but substance comes quickly in the body. “There’s nothing I know for sure because I know for sure that things change.” She talks about self-identity, coming out, being ostracized in Hollywood, and how ultimately those types of experience “give us layers of depth and make us interesting.”
The actual feature? It meets my expectations. The first page is dedicated to rehashing the cover campaign story, biographical info, and finally the start of the phone Q&A with Oprah. While some old ground is re-treaded, the balance of the interview gets into those spiritual-ish topics that Oprah is known for — in this case, in relation to Ellen’s coming out, becoming a vegan, being in love, and how being a performer will influence her upcoming American Idol duties.
I certainly view Ellen as a very balanced and very happy person, which fascinates me given all that she’s been through. The interview does shed partial light how that is, but I don’t think completely nails it. I suppose I’m a little disappointed in the length of the feature. Given the thickness of this issue (I had a hard time keeping it balanced in the bathtub), I had expected more substantial Ellen content.
But is it worth buying? Yep. Especially if you like per-pound deals when buying your periodicals. |

I’ve had a crazy week with graduate school stuff, and it’s always nice to be able to relax for a half-hour and let Stephen remove my stresses for a half-hour. Even if he does that by shaving some other guy’s head. Well, let’s get on with the recap!

Six Degrees: Glenn Eichler and Allison Silverman http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/NoFactZone/~3/xt87fRYON3k/ http://www.nofactzone.net/?p=18549 Hi gang! I hope everyone had a good weekend and is ready to face Monday. (What, already?) This is just a quick drive-by post to fill you in on some news about a couple of our favorite Colbert Report people.
Glenn Eichler
- Hollywood University blog has a great interview with TCR writer Glenn Eichler, who talks about becoming a TV writer. Here he discusses his transition from writing for an animated show to writing for the Report.
Interview with The Colbert Report’s Glenn Eichler – Hollywood University blog
Your credits include animated series as well as The Colbert Report. How did you make the jump from one genre to another, and what advice do you have for other writers wanting to do the same (i.e. miving from comedy to drama)?
I made the jump because the animated show I wrote for five years (Daria) had a sort of cultish cachet, so I got to meet some up-and-coming comedy writers while doing it. By the time the show wrapped, several of them had become established in the industry, including Ben Karlin, who became e.p. of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. He recommended me for the latter when it was staffing up. So my story may be a little atypical. But my advice for writers is always the same: never stop writing, even when you’re not being paid to, and try to learn as many genres as you can. Even so, you may get pigeonholed in one area — I was “the guy who can write in a teenage girl’s voice,” until I became “the political satire guy.”
Allison Silverman
- Somewhat related to the topic of the interview with Glenn Eichler is this New York Times article about women writers — or more precisely, the lack of them — in late night television. Among the women writers and producers who were quoted in the article was former TCR head writer and executive producer Allison Silverman.
Among late-night writers, few women in the room – New York Times
“When you’re writing for late night, you’re writing through one person’s prism, and that person at the shows you’re looking at is always a dude,” said Hallie Haglund, one of the new writers on “The Daily Show.” Allison Silverman, who has served as the only woman writer first on “The Daily Show” then on Conan O’Brien’s staff, said she has no trouble assuming the voices of male hosts. Bu tshe added, “I don’t think the issue of sensibility is off base. The hosts and the staffs I worked on often resembled one another. Have you seen how many tall Irish people are on Conan’s staff?”
. . .
Writer’s rooms have always had a reputation for crude behavior. Ms. Silverman described both “The Daily Show” and Mr. O’Brien’s show as “really good experiences” — though rife with crudeness. “There were plenty of penis jokes,” she said. “On occasion I’ve told them myself, though my penis jokes were rarely good. I don’t quite have the feel.”
- In other Allison Silverman news, Variety reports that she’s just won a Muse Award from New York Women in Film and Television: New York Women in Film and Television has announced the winners of this year’s Muse Awards. “The Good Wife’s” Julianna Margulies, “Ugly Betty’s” America Ferrera, The Colbert Report” writer-producer Allison Silverman and Lifetime Networks CEO Andrea Wong will be presented their awards at the Muse Awards gala Dec. 9 at the New York Hilton.

Fangirl Suit Report – Week of November 9 http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/NoFactZone/~3/f4UNp-DgU3I/ http://www.nofactzone.net/?p=18487
Hey ya’ll! I’m just a little excited because I met somebody today! Somebody at the bookstore! Somebody who has the same taste in literature as I do! Oh, and the adventure begins again. Edition: Kinda goofy.
Monday, November 9
Black pinstripe suit, white shirt, navy, red & white striped tie, french cuffs
BKAD: Black suit, white shirt, gold tie with blue and white diagonal stripes, no cuffs
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- I like to think he’s really always as excited as he acts at the beginning of the show. :3
- He never wears barrel cuffs anymore ;-;
- I love when BKAD interviewees actually look like they’re have as good a time as Stephen appears to be having.

Tuesday, November 10
Black suit, white shirt, black tie with pink dots, no cuffs.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- brb, playin’ the smokey water flute
- AH! The dance-behind-Barney-Frank dance! Always loved it so much.
- The Islamic Revolution Pheasant. Oh. Man. Lol.
- He is so cute holy god. This is not even a comment on the show, just, he is and you know it, internets.
- Trying really hard right now to not write something wholly inappropriate involving a few choice euphemisms and/or ice cream. All ending in “I’m all for that, baby.”

And there is no way I was about to NOT screencap this:

Wednesday, November 11
Black thin pinstripe suit, white shirt, navy tie with silver square pattern, no cuffs.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Ooh, free yogurALKJFEIOLFJSAFFFFFFFF.
- A lot in this episode reminded me of I Am America (And So Can You). ‘Specially the Pox News cast, teehee. What if – liberals won…
- Continued on page lettuce.
Because, “reading a hamburger” is perhaps equally as goofy as eating one.

Thursday, November 12
Black suit, white shirt, gold tie with purple pattern, french cuffs
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- In your face and massively dope.
- Award-winning xenophobe. Oh how poignant~
- “Ahhhh I think I know everything! Guatemalan werewolves are massing on our borders!” – Lou Dobbs/Stephen Colbert
- That guy is loaded.
- Yes! Another rendition of Star Spangled Banner, complete with ridiculous harmonies. :D

And I will end on this note:

Fin!

MSNBC not shy about criticizing Obama MSNBC Presses Obama on Campaign Promises If President Obama happened to glance at “The Rachel Maddow Show” last Monday, he might have winced. Ms. Maddow pretended to celebrate the passage of a health care overhaul bill in the House, calling it “potentially a huge generational win for the Democratic Party” — but then halted the triumphant music and called it an “electoral defeat.” The Stupak amendment, she said, was “the biggest restriction on abortion rights in a generation.” Then she wondered aloud about the consequences for Democrats “if they don’t get women or anybody who’s pro-choice to ever vote for them again.” She returned to the subject the next four evenings in a row. This is how it looks to have a television network pressuring President Obama from the left. While much attention has been paid to the feud between the Fox News Channel and the White House, the Obama administration is now facing criticism of a different sort from Ms. Maddow, Keith Olbermann and other progressive hosts on MSNBC, who are using their nightly news-and-views-casts to measure what she calls “the distance between Obama’s rhetoric and his actions.” While they may agree with much of what Mr. Obama says, they have pressed him to keep his campaign promises about health care, civil liberties and other issues. “I don’t think our audience is looking for unequivocal ‘rah-rah,’ ” said Ms. Maddow, who calls herself a liberal but not a Democrat. The spectacle of Democrats sniping at one another is not new, but having a TV home for it is. MSNBC — sometimes critically called the “home team” for supporters of Mr. Obama — has even hit upon the theme with a promotional tagline, “pushing back on the president,” in commercials for “Hardball,” Chris Matthews’s political hour. “Our job is not to echo the president’s talking points,” said Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC. “Our job is to hold whoever’s in power’s feet to the fire.” SourceThere's nothing here that we don't already know - like, you know, the fact that Fox can suck MSNBC's balls any old time. It's mostly preaching to the choir to be honest - the librul media defending one of its own. But I know that MSNBC and especially Rachel and Keith love is always welcome here :) |

10 Reasons Why the Stupak-Pitts Amendment Has to Go
Once upon a time in America, men lorded over women, screwed any woman they could, and women and children paid the price. That quaint world lives on in the Family's C Street house, home to Sen. John Ensign, former home to Gov. Mark Sanford, and home to the new celebrities, Reps. Bart Stupak and Joseph Pitts. They'd like to revive that old-time religion throughout the land. Thanks to the Democratic Party they are one big giant step closer to their retro dream. Lest you're also feeling nostalgic for a simpler time, here are some features of that lost world you might want to consider. Not too long ago children born to unmarried women had their birth certificates stamped "illegitimate." Why? You might suppose this was to enforce universal chastity on all. Nope. Just women. Nine out of ten men had sex before marriage. Four out of ten women weren't virgins at marriage, but most of that premarital sex was with their fiances shortly before the wedding. Almost 40 percent of men reported extramarital affairs at the time; among women just over 10 percent fooled around. Who knew Don Draper was Everyman? The real purpose of the state's stamp of disapproval? To deny children and their mothers any legal claim on the father's income and property. Not until 1968 did the Supreme Court rule that 'illegitimate' children had the same legal rights as legitimate ones. I bring up this tale of the real-life consequences of the double standard because we need to be clear what is at stake in the Stupak-Pitts antiabortion amendment in the House Health Care Reform bill. Even if some Democrats who voted for the amendment did so because of deep convictions or from fear of the wrath of the Catholic Church, the main thrust of the measure is to condemn women for being sexually active. (If this seems a stretch to you, take a look at the comments section across the blogosphere. Women have to 'take responsibility' for their sex. Who knew humans had figured out asexual reproduction?) ( Cut for good sense ). Source |

Professor, schoolgirl share victim status in grope case
Last April, the Supreme Court reversed a Tokyo High Court decision that found Masahiro Nakura, a professor of medicine at the Self-Defense Forces University, guilty of being a chikan (groper) after he was charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old high school girl on the Odakyu train line in 2006. A majority of the judges said they thought the girl's statement was "unreliable."The media hailed the verdict as a victory for justice and common sense. Veteran journalist Soichiro Tahara brought Nakura on to TV Asahi's "Sunday Project" and extended his sympathies. The system was so infernal, Tahara said, that "even a distinguished professor" had to endure three trials (the original plus two appeals) and the presumed browbeating of police and prosecutors. Tahara's words brought tears to Nakura's eyes — and to the eyes of the show's female announcer as well. However, not everyone was happy. A recent issue of Kinyobi ran several essays by women writers who think the judges were prejudiced. Nobuko Kamenaga starts off hers by saying that the "iron rule" of a criminal trial is that the benefit of the doubt should favor the suspect, but such a premise assumes that the suspect is the person on trial. Based on the judges' opinions, she concludes that it was the victim who was on trial. ( More ) |

Axelrod Knocks Romney: 'Never Had Responsibility For Any Decision Akin To This'
On CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, White House senior adviser David Axelrod responded to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's criticism of the president. Romney expressed incredulity that President Obama had not made up his mind on Afghanistan. "Why is it taking so long?" host John King asked. "Governor Romney has to choose one argument of another," Axelrod responded. " Either he has to say he is not paying attention or he has to say he is taking too long because he has been involved in a rigorous review ... You know, I know that Governor Romney has never had responsibility for any decision akin to this, so he just may not be familiar with all that it entails." source |

It's Time to End 'Too Big to Fail' Of the 8,195 banks in this nation, just four, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), Citigroup (NYSE: C), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC), and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) control nearly 40% of the deposits. Those four, plus Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), hold 97% of the industry's notional derivative exposure. These statistics would be hilarious if they weren't true, and if the banks behind them didn't have the power to manipulate vast portions of the economy. We spent the latter half of 2008 feeling the wrath of "too big to fail." Today, banks are bigger than ever. We need to end that. Now. ( Read more... )

MASSIVE SHOCKS SHOCKED SHOCKINGLY SHOWING LOBBYISTS WROTE SPEECHES FOR BIPARTISAN HOUSE SPEAKERS! WASHINGTON — In the official record of the historic House debate on overhauling health care, the speeches of many lawmakers echo with similarities. Often, that was no accident.
Statements by more than a dozen lawmakers were ghostwritten, in whole or in part, by Washington lobbyists working for Genentech, one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies.
...
Genentech, a subsidiary of the Swiss drug giant Roche, estimates that 42 House members picked up some of its talking points — 22 Republicans and 20 Democrats, an unusual bipartisan coup for lobbyists.
In an interview, Representative Bill Pascrell Jr., Democrat of New Jersey, said: “I regret that the language was the same. I did not know it was.” He said he got his statement from his staff and “did not know where they got the information from.”
Members of Congress submit statements for publication in the Congressional Record all the time, often with a decorous request to “revise and extend my remarks.” It is unusual for so many revisions and extensions to match up word for word. It is even more unusual to find clear evidence that the statements originated with lobbyists.
...
In an e-mail message to fellow lobbyists on Nov. 5, two days before the House vote, Todd M. Weiss, senior managing director of Sonnenschein, said, “We are trying to secure as many House R’s and D’s to offer this/these statements for the record as humanly possible.”
He told the lobbyists to “conduct aggressive outreach to your contacts on the Hill to see if their bosses would offer the attached statements (or an edited version) for the record.”
In recent years, Genentech’s political action committee and lobbyists for Roche and Genentech have made campaign contributions to many House members, including some who filed statements in the Congressional Record. And company employees have been among the hosts at fund-raisers for some of those lawmakers. But Evan L. Morris, head of Genentech’s Washington office, said, “There was no connection between the contributions and the statements.”
...
The statements were not intended to change the bill, which was not open for much amendment during the debate. They were meant to show bipartisan support for certain provisions, even though the vote on passage generally followed party lines.
Democrats emphasized the bill’s potential to create jobs in health care, health information technology and clinical research on new drugs.
Republicans opposed the bill, but praised a provision that would give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to approve generic versions of expensive biotechnology drugs, along the lines favored by brand-name companies like Genentech.
...
In separate statements using language suggested by the lobbyists, Representatives Blaine Luetkemeyer of Missouri and Joe Wilson of South Carolina, both Republicans, said: “One of the reasons I have long supported the U.S. biotechnology industry is that it is a homegrown success story that has been an engine of job creation in this country. Unfortunately, many of the largest companies that would seek to enter the biosimilar market have made their money by outsourcing their research to foreign countries like India.”
...
In the standard Democratic statement, Representative Robert A. Brady of Pennsylvania said: “Let me repeat that for some of my friends on the other side of the aisle. This bill will create high-paying, high-quality jobs in health care delivery, technology and research in the United States.”
...
Some differences were just a matter of style. Representative Yvette D. Clarke, Democrat of New York, said, “I see this bill as an exciting opportunity to create the kind of jobs we so desperately need in this country, while at the same time improving the lives of all Americans.”
Representative Donald M. Payne, Democrat of New Jersey, used the same words, but said the bill would improve the lives of “ALL Americans.”
Mr. Payne and Mr. Brady said the bill would “create new opportunities and markets for our brightest technology minds.” Mr. Pascrell said the bill would “create new opportunities and markets for our brightest minds in technology.”
In nearly identical words, three Republicans — Representatives K. Michael Conaway of Texas, Lynn Jenkins of Kansas and Lee Terry of Nebraska — said they had criticized many provisions of the bill, and “rightfully so.”
But, each said, “I do believe the sections relating to the creation of a market for biosimilar products is one area of the bill that strikes the appropriate balance in providing lower cost options.”

Stephen Harper arrives in India for trade talks Prime Minister Stephen Harper arrived in India on Sunday for a three-day visit and talks with leaders overseeing one of the world's fast-growing economies. His visit follows a weekend trip to Singapore for the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit, where he said Canada wants to boost investment opportunities in Asia. "While Canada's economy was built through transatlantic trade, our future prosperity will increasingly depend on our ties to the Pacific. The region is home to some of the world's most dynamic and fastest growing economies," Harper said in a statement released Sunday. During meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other officials, Harper's team hopes to promote trade as well as nuclear co-operation. The two sides are expected to discuss a proposed civil nuclear agreement, which would pave the way for Canada to sell nuclear technology to India. Nuclear trade between the two countries has been stalled since 1974, when India tested its first nuclear weapon with the unauthorized help of Canadian nuclear technology. On Monday, Harper will hold round-table discussions in Mumbai with Indian investors doing business in Canada. A number of trade agreements are expected to be signed in a bid to expand bilateral trade. The two countries currently do less than $5 billion in trade annually. Harper will also tour the city's Chabad House, the Jewish outreach centre where gunmen, later linked to a terror group that hit a number of targets in Mumbai, killed six hostages a year ago. Later in the day, the prime minister will deliver a speech on Canada-Indian relations and meet Bollywood star Akshay Kumar. On Tuesday, he flies to New Delhi. The following day, he'll be in Amritsar, where he will visit the Golden Temple. After returning home, Harper plans to visit China from Dec. 2 to 6. Swim Club Accused Of Racism To File For BankruptcyA suburban swim club accused of discrimination last summer after revoking the memberships of mostly black and Hispanic children plans to declare bankruptcy, a newspaper reported Saturday.Valley Swim Club president John Duesler sent an e-mail to club "friends and families" Friday saying the board of directors had voted to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy this week, The Philadelphia Daily News reported. Duesler wrote in the e-mail that many would blame the bankruptcy on legal proceedings and negative media exposure, the newspaper said. But, he said, "the truth is that the club has struggled to stay out of the red for at least the last decade" and owes more than $100,000 in operational expenses and legal fees, the newspaper reported. Old Man Goes Senile and Insane. Declares War on AARP. McCain urges town hall attendees to cut up thier AARP membership cards. Last week, the AARP, a nonpartisan organization that advocates on behalf of those aged 50 and over, endorsed the House health care bill. “We can say with confidence that it meets our priorities for protecting Medicare, providing more affordable health insurance for 50- to 64-year-olds and reforming our health care system,” AARP vice president Nancy Leamond said. At a town hall meeting in Arizona on Friday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) vowed to “fight with every fiber of my body” to oppose a similar health care reform bill in the Senate. He then claimed that Medicare will actually be “cut” and reportedly urged the town hall attendees to tear up their AARP membership cards: The 2,000-page bill would mean more regulation and mandates, he said. People wouldn’t be able to keep the coverage they had. It would also increase taxes and the cost of Medicare, he said.
The bill claims to save $500 billion in waste from Medicare, he said.
“I don’t think so,” McCain said. “I think it’s going to cut it.”
He encouraged audience members to cut up their AARP cards and send them back. |

As Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, reveals in the episode, the movement began in the 1980s as a reaction to feminism. "Good" Christian women, many of them in the home-schooling community, embraced homemaking as their highest calling and left family planning in God's hands. Says Rachel Scott, a mother of eight and grandmother of one who was featured in the episode, "I believe conceiving children and giving birth is an act of worship. You're submitting to God's goal for the planet and God's goal for you as a woman." She adds that women should submit to men, in her opinion. But not all Quiverfull mothers are happy being submissive to God and their husbands. Although Vyckie Garrison was involved in the movement for 14 years, she divorced her husband and left the Quiverfull movement after her daughter attempted suicide. "That was not part of what we had signed up for when we got into the whole Quiverfull belief," she explains in the episode. "We were a godly family. We were doing things God's way." Garrison says that after that wake-up call, she apologized to her kids for putting God, her husband and the Quiverfull movement ahead of herself and her children. "Now I'm gonna put you guys first," she promised. So who's right? Well, perhaps Garrison puts it best when she says, "there is no one-size-fits-all model" for families.
